Question by m: What are some legitimate New York talent agencies?
I want to gain a position working as an extra, but don’t really know where to start. My research has led me to sites where I have to pay a fee to search and apply to open jobs, or to agencies like Actors’ Reps, which sounds like a scam to me. What are some legitimate agencies, or just places to learn about open calls, where I can find work asking for extras in the New York/New Jersey area?

You do not necessarily need an agent to engage in extra work but you do need to know the proper casting companies that handle extra work for films and TV.

Your research needs to consist of more than just rooting around on the web. Get to a Samuel French bookstore and start reading the books that will guide you on the business of being an actor if that is really what you want to do. Make no mistake, you will be investing money into your career and it will be a long time if ever before you see any profit from it. This career is not for the weak or faint of heart.
